Laminate flooring is a type of flooring produced from HDF (High-Density Fiberboard) industrial wood panels - a type of high-density plywood, combined with surface coatings to create a durable, aesthetic and easy-to-maintain product.
Unlike natural wood floors, engineered wood floors do not use 100% solid wood but instead are a combination of natural wood fibers (80-85%), adhesives and additives to enhance moisture resistance and termite resistance.
According to a Nielsen survey, more than 60% of users prefer laminate flooring because of its convenience, durability and ease of maintenance.
To evaluate the quality of laminate flooring, important criteria include: high density core, standard humidity, thick surface coating, natural wood grain reproduction, tight locking system, health safety, scratch resistance and load bearing capacity.
Currently, prominent laminate flooring brands such as Thaixin, Galamax, Glomax, Kosmos, Vario, Robina, Kronotex, Egger Aqua, Tiger, EcoFloor and Kapan offer a wide range of products at a wide range of prices. Users can easily choose designs, colors and styles that suit their budget and interior design style.
The process of installing laminate flooring is carried out through three main steps: surface treatment, floor installation and installation of finishing accessories.
Follow the article to choose the right type of laminate flooring!
What is laminate flooring?
Laminate flooring is a flooring material made from industrial wood panels. This product is made from many layers of materials pressed together to create high durability and stability. The core of laminate flooring is usually made from HDF (High-Density Fiberboard) - a type of high-density fiberboard, of which 80-85% is natural wood fiber.
These wood fibers are processed from natural wood materials, go through the process of grinding into powder, removing impurities and carefully processing to ensure quality. The remaining part (about 10-15%) is additives and specialized adhesives, helping to increase moisture resistance, anti-termite and improve the product's hardness and durability.
Laminate flooring stands out with its natural, authentic wood grain surface, bringing a luxurious and modern beauty to the living space. Thanks to its outstanding advantages such as high durability, good moisture resistance, strong impact resistance, easy cleaning and reasonable price, laminate flooring becomes the ideal choice for many different interior design styles.
With a variety of designs and high aesthetics, this product meets the needs of many customers from family apartments to commercial spaces.
According to Nielsen: Customers increasingly prefer laminate flooring because of its reasonable price, diverse designs and ease of installation. This is a perfect alternative to natural wood flooring, especially in the context of increasing demand for construction and interior decoration.
Criteria for Evaluating the Quality of Laminate Flooring
Criteria for evaluating the quality of laminate flooring include: solid core, thick surface coating, tight locking system, safe for health, outstanding load-bearing and abrasion resistance according to AC standards.
Wood flooring core
The density of the core plays an important role in determining the durability and load-bearing capacity of the wooden floor. A high-density core makes the floor more solid, increases impact resistance, and reduces the risk of warping and shrinkage during use.
According to the International Flooring Association (IFA): HDF flooring has 1,5 times more load-bearing and warp-resistant capacity than MDF flooring.
In addition, the core moisture content is a key factor affecting the stability of the wooden floor. If not properly controlled, the floor can expand or contract, leading to gaps and reducing aesthetics. The moisture content is usually kept at 6-8% to ensure that the floor does not deform even when the environmental humidity changes.
Surface coating
The thicker the coating, the higher the scratch and abrasion resistance, helping the floor surface to always be shiny and maintain its lasting beauty over time.
Besides the protective ability, the surface coating also plays an important role in reproducing natural wood grain - the most important aesthetic factor of laminate flooring.
The thickness of the coating is rated based on the AC (Abrasion Class) standard – a measure of the abrasion resistance of the floor surface.
According to the European Standards Organization (EN), products meeting AC4 and AC5 standards are 2-3 times more scratch resistant than AC3, suitable for areas with high traffic.
Lock system
The locking groove is the connection between the wooden floor panels, making installation easy and accurate. Popular locking groove systems today such as Unilin, Synchloc, Clic2Clic, V-Groove all have their own advantages. For example, Unilin locking groove stands out thanks to its firmness, while V-Groove creates a V-shaped groove between the panels, increasing the aesthetics of the space.
High quality locking joints provide a tight fit, allowing the panels to fit together seamlessly without leaving any gaps. This prevents water, dirt and bacteria from entering the joints, protecting the core from moisture and extending the life of the floor.
Health safety
Formaldehyde is a toxic chemical commonly found in industrial wood materials. Industrial wood flooring products meet E0, E1 or E2 standards for formaldehyde emissions, of which E0 is the safest level. This ensures clean air, safe for the health of users, especially children and the elderly.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), long-term exposure to formaldehyde can cause irritation to the eyes, nose and throat. Therefore, choosing products that meet E0 or E1 standards is extremely necessary.
Scratch and impact resistance
Scratch-resistant coatings can be rated AC3, AC4 or AC5, with AC5 being the most scratch-resistant. Floors rated this way will retain their shine and be less susceptible to damage even when subjected to impacts from shoes, pets or furniture.
The load-bearing capacity of laminate flooring depends on the high-density HDF core and the surface coating. Thanks to its solid structure, the floor can withstand heavy weight from furniture and external forces. In particular, high-quality laminate flooring does not sag, deform or crack even when subjected to heavy loads for a long time.

Laminate Flooring Installation Guide
Laminate flooring installation consists of three main stages: surface preparation, floor installation and finishing accessories.
Surface preparation
First, the floor surface must be flat, clean, and free of foreign objects such as excess cement, sand, dust, or other debris. If the floor surface is uneven or rough, the locking groove of the wooden floor may break during installation or use.
After the floor surface is treated, the floor underlayment (foam underlay) will be installed to protect the wooden floor from moisture from the floor surface and reduce noise when moving. Usually using silver foam or PE foam with a thickness of 2mm to 3mm.
The foam panels are spread evenly over the entire surface of the floor, ensuring that the edges of the foam panels overlap at least 10cm and fixed with tape to prevent displacement during construction. This foam layer has an effective moisture-proof effect, protecting the wood core from the risk of mold and damage.
Finally, it is necessary to check the moisture content of the subfloor and the floor core before installation. The optimal moisture content for laminate flooring is below 7%.
Research from the Vietnam Institute of Construction Materials shows that if the surface humidity exceeds 7%, the risk of blistering and warping of wooden floors increases by 20-30% compared to floors with standard humidity.
Install wooden floors
In this step, the choice of installation method plays an important role in creating the aesthetics and style of the space. There are many different installation styles such as herringbone, ladder or staggered installation. These methods create different visual effects and bring a luxurious, modern beauty to the interior space.
According to European Interiors Journal: the herringbone installation style enhances the aesthetics of the space, creating a more luxurious and classy feel.
Perform installation as follows:
- Spread a layer of moisture-proof plastic about 2mm thick to protect the floor surface from moisture below.
- Determine the starting wall angle and direction of flooring installation, usually following the direction of natural light to increase aesthetics.
- Install the first panel in the corner of the room. Place the groove panel at a 45-degree angle to the groove panel and fit them together. Use a rubber mallet to tap lightly to create a secure connection.
- Repeat this process for additional panels until the entire room is covered.
- Keep a gap of at least 10mm between the floor edge and the wall to allow for expansion and contraction as temperature and humidity change. This gap will be covered by the baseboard.
Important notes:
- Avoid construction in high humidity conditions (over 80%) or when it is raining.
- Use a rubber mallet to assemble the locking joints, do not use a metal hammer as it may damage the locking joints.
- Be sure to check the tightness of the locking grooves after each row of installation to avoid re-installation.
Install accessories
After completing the floor surface installation, it is necessary to install accessories such as baseboards, connecting strips and finishing strips.
Baseboards are installed to hide the expansion gap between the floor edge and the wall, creating a seamless and aesthetic space. The baseboards are usually fixed with silicone glue or specialized pins to ensure firmness.
In areas where wood flooring transitions to other types of flooring (e.g. tile), T-bend should be used to cover the transition groove and create a seamless connection. The joint also helps to minimize the risk of height differences between the two materials, while ensuring safety when moving.
Frequently Asked Questions About Laminate Flooring
Is laminate flooring more prone to gaps and gaps than natural wood flooring?
